Watersports in Cornwall

Make the most of Cornwall’s coastline, get active or simply enjoy the views from the water.

The lure of the sea

Surrounded by stunning coast and enticing clear seas, Cornwall is a great place to try watersports. Lessons are available year round in a variety of sports including surfing, bodyboarding, stand-up paddle boarding, coasteering and kayaking to name a few.

For those not so inclined to try a sport, sea safaris give another perspective on the Cornish coast. Several operators hold regular excursions and it’s a great opportunity to get up close to some of the marine wildlife, in particular dolphins and seals.

South coast creeks and rivers

Whereas the north coast is famous for surfing, the south is known for its maze of creeks and rivers. Falmouth is a good place to head to if you’d like to join in on a boat trip or even learn to build a raft. Fowey is great for canoeing and river cruises are popular during peak season. Coasteering and SUPing (Stand up paddle boarding) are also available.

Windsurfing, kitesurfing and diving are popular in the south. Polkerris beach is a good place to hire equipment and the sandy harbour is quite sheltered. Equipment, lessons and excursions are also offered at Pentewen where water skiing and wakeboarding are also on offer.

Surfing

For surfing, the beaches near Falmouth are your best bet on the south coast. For the biggest waves though, head north to Newquay where tuition and equipment hire are readily available and the waves have a bit more of an edge.

Tuition providers for beginners through to experienced surfers can be found at Watergate Bay, Fistral and some of the other beaches whilst The Pit Surf Shop in St Merryn Cornwall is a 1 stop surf shop dealing with sales and hire whilst also being one mile from 7 great surf beaches.
